2011 Children's Yoga and Arts Camp
July 11-15:  5 - 8 year olds
August 8-12:  7 - 9 year olds

This exciting one week yoga and arts camp offers your child a unique opportunity to explore, create and have fun! Children will enjoy a nurturing, supportive and non-competitive environment in which to explore. They will stretch and energize their bodies, explore creative expression through a variety of art materials, learn mindfulness, self calming and relaxation techniques and make new friends. Concepts that will be woven throughout the program are community, balance and harmony.

Yoga

Each day your child will experience the benefits of yoga through games and activities. Children will explore yoga postures to help them feel grounded, find their balance and begin exploring their own creativity. Through the use of movement and breath awareness, they will increase their self-awareness and self confidence.

Art

Children will explore drawing, painting and sculpture through a variety of art materials. The art work will have a particular emphasis on the connection with yoga practice, helping students to understand postures by creating them visually through art as well as with their bodies.

Our Staff

Sara Murphy has studied yoga at The Avalon for the past 7 years and found that yoga has had a tremendous impact on her life and world view. She completed the Avalon Yoga Studio’s 200hr Teacher Training Certification program in 2010 and currently teaches classes for the studio. She holds a B.S. in Sculpture from Towson University and a M.Ed. from University of Maryland.  Sara has taught art in Baltimore County Public Schools for the past 8 years and currently teaches at Halethorpe Elementary School. She is particularly interested in combining yoga practice with creating art.

Missy Wheeler has been practicing yoga for several years. She has taught Prekindergarten and Kindergarten children in the classroom for over 20 years. Missy has been using yoga concepts and techniques in her classroom and recently trained through Radiant Child to teach yoga to children. She will complete the Avalon 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in July 2011. Missy is excited to bring fun as well as a sense of calm and peacefulness to children as they explore yoga.
